Why We Harp
by J. B. Herrera, College of Engineering and Mathematics, University of Vermont

The pain of hunger doesn't go away until we eat;
The ignorant know nothing until educated;
The child cries until her mother picks her up ... or until he falls asleep.

So is the condition of the oppressed:
The black man and woman, the Hispanic, the Native American, the poor, the Asian, the white woman without a job ... the gays without a safe space.

We all harp, we all hunger, we all cry;
For justice, for fairness, for education and health care ... For safety!

But, some of us finally fall asleep;
In the arms of drugs, of alcohol, of depression ... Of violence.

We harp because we are not there yet.
We have no justice yet.
Racism, classism, homophobia, ageism ... are all still committed against us.

In language, in action and in the omission of ourselves in the larger societal context.

So we harp and we cry until someone hopefully picks us up!
