[an error occurred while processing this directive] They Don’t Understand
by Julia Au

They don’t get what it truly means to be caught between two worlds,
immensely incoherent from one another,
yet ultimately grouped as one.

The towers cascade from mountains
that separates your ignorance,
of not understanding the battle I am waging
against you.

You traveled here with intentions I grew up learning,
You overshadow my heritage
and captured only the hearts of your form,
that you have delicately selected,
deserting myself to a mound of tears.

You don’t know what it feels to be made fun of as a kid,
ditched and abandoned as a teen,
or even how it feels to be unwanted, ignored as an adult.

Chinese American is what they call me.
You are just Chinese.

So don’t say what you know if you don’t understand.
