Humbled
by Valdana L. Moreno, the grandmother of a 14 month old, from Kansas

Remember grand daughter,
My precious Tierra Nicole,
People can be cruel
And ignorant and cold.

Because you are joyful
Skin velvet and smooth,
Eyes bright like the night
Soft hair made to ruse--

Because of your dimples
Permanently you, girl!
Because of your rhythm
And ability to twirl--

Because you are smart
And determined to learn,
I pray that one day
You will learn to discern--

People will judge you
And hurt you and worse,
Try to make you feel
Your heritage as cursed--

But baby you listen
To Grammy right now,
For those people are confused
And are hurting somehow.

How can they know of
The love that conceived you,
The prayers that envelope you,
The God that believes in you?

They'll shake their heads at the little bi-racial girl
And sadly, my love, will not have a clue,
That they should be humbled by the very presence of God's
strength
compassion
mercy
hope
love
and Spirit
in you.
Remember: Always and forever in You!
