Multicultural Teaching Practice and Curriculum Transformation in the Online Information Age
Multiculturally-Guided Assessment of Web Resources:
A New Assessment Tool
Web Sites Are Fundamentally Different from Other Educational Media
- No formal review process for educational Web sites - credibility
- No editorial process for Web publication - accuracy
- Unlike books and films, Web sites content can change from day to day - stability
- Less clear distinction between commercial and educational ventures - bias
- Hypernavigation means you must think about a site's content AND the content of the sites linked from it
- The Web medium has educational capabilities not shared by other education media - interactivity
Characteristics of a Multicultural Approach to Product Evaluation
- Examines extent to which product engages multiple learning styles
- Exposes prejudiced content or imagery
- Pays special attention to product author or creator and the perspectives, biases, and assumptions he or she may have
- Pays special attention to a product's sponsor or funding agency and the perspectives, biases, and assumptions it may contribute
- Determines the extent to which the product encourages multiple voices to participate and further construct knowledge
- Examines whether the product encourages critical thinking in users
- Establishes whether the product facilitates divergent perspectives and attitudes
