Collaboration

Collaboration among educators for the greater good of education is not a new concept. It is not uncommon to see a group of teachers from a given school working together to develop lesson plans which stretch across disciplines, affording students a connection point from subject to subject. For some, struggling with time and resource constraints, resource sharing and collaborative planning become vital practices of day-to-day classroom operations. For others, it is an avenue for modeling constructive and cooperative bridge-building across groups.

The Internet, as with inclusive education, tremendously expands collaborative boundaries. While my network of collaborative partners was once constrained to those educators in close proximity to me, the Internet ignores such limits, affording me the opportunity to exchange ideas and resources across regions, nationalities, ethnicities, and most other cultural barriers. Moreover, because I have never received funding for the Pavilion, collaboration is a vital tool in the development of new content throughout the site's sections including the Awareness Activities, theTeacher's Corner, and the Multicultural Song Index, a list of songs teachers can use in the classroom to introduce discussions on racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression. The list was compiled by an international group of K-12 educators from a variety of disciplines. (It is important to note that socioeconomic oppression in the education systems of the United States and other countries remains a formidable constraint to global collaboration through the exclusion of many individuals from the on-line community.)
