Guide to Educational Email Forums

E-mail discussion forums allow groups of folks to arrange conversations on a given topic through e-mail. If you subscribe to a discussion group, known also as "listservs" or "mailing lists" depending on the type of software used to run the forum, you can post one message which is then distributed to other subscribers of the group. Likewise, when other subscribers post messages, you will automatically receive them in your e-mail mailbox. Anybody with an e-mail account may join discussion groups, allowing for large, diverse, worldwide participation for many exising groups. For information on the Multicultural Pavilion's e-mail discussion group, go here.

Below is a list of selected educational e-mail discussion groups, as well as instructions for subscribing to groups. The list is not nearly a complete one, but instead a collection of groups I have come across or others have suggested. To suggestion an additional group, write Paul Gorski.

Subscribing

You subscribe to e-mail discussion groups by sending an e-mail to the servers on which they reside including the following simple command in the body of the message:

subscribe [name of list] [your first name] [your last name]

For example, to subscribe to the Multicultural Pavilion's discussion group, MCPavilion, I would write send a message to the program on the University of Virginia's server which houses mailing lists, majordomo@virginia.edu, with the following as the body of the message:

subscribe mcpavilion Paul Gorski

Anything you put in the subject line(s) of subscription requests will be ignored.

Within 24 hours of sending this request, you should receive a message from the discussion group's administrator or facilitator with instructions for posting messages, unsubscribing, and other commands, if available.

You can subscribe to the following groups two ways:

  1. Click on the names of the group(s) below. An e-mail window will appear for e-mail capable browsers. Make sure the e-mail preferences are set correctly for your browser.
  2. Drag the mouse over the name of the group you're interested in joining. In the bottom left corner of your browser window, you'll see the e-mail address for subscribing to the group. Write down the address, and subscribe through your regular e-mail application when convenient.
Some groups listed below have subtly different instructions for subscription. To subscribe to these groups, follow the instructions in parenthesis after the groups' description.
